As Tanaav Season 2 Volume 2 on Sony LIV, continues to captivate audiences, actress Gitikka Ganju Dhar is receiving accolades for her compelling portrayal of Nafeesa — a character that symbolizes the resilience and strength inherent in Kashmiri women. Gitikka shares insights into her character’s evolution and the profound impact of the story, reflecting her commitment to portraying the Kashmiri narrative authentically.
“The track of my character Nafeesa began midway in the first volume of Season 2; it gathers girth in the second volume and contributes to symbolizing the inherent integrity and strength of a Kashmiri woman. It also helps build the ruthlessness quotient of one of the main protagonists, Al Damishq, the dreaded terrorist who is at the center of the action. Nafeesa’s character takes a sharp curve in Volume 2, and it is quite interesting. As a historical legacy, the Kashmir conflict has been an outstanding issue for more than half a century. The people of Kashmir, especially the women of Kashmir, have seen strife, tragedy, and turmoil all their lives. I have tried to convey truthfully the pragmatism and dignity of strength that is ingrained in Kashmiri women, whether a Pandit or a Muslim.”
The emotional depth of Tanaav is a hallmark of the series, and Gitikka recalls a particularly memorable scene in Volume 2 that resonated with her. “The scene where my tenant Al Damishq and I interact over tea and speak about the erstwhile Kashmir, how my husband in the show was a fan of Mehendi Hasan, and how Kashmir, before the blatant breakout of terrorism, was truly a jannat, Gar Bar-ru-e-ZaminAst; HaminAst, HaminAst HaminAst, words that justified the splendour of Kashmir in the most perfect way. The setting is her beautiful Kashmiri home, a hot cup of Kashmiri tea, and a conversation about music, which reminded me of my experiences in Kashmir. Also, my dad has served as an Army Officer, and my husband in the show was an Army Officer. Kashmir is ours, Kashmiris are ours, and Kashmiriyat is also ours.”
Working alongside Gaurav Arora, who plays Al Damishq, has been a rewarding experience for Gitikka. “He is a disciplined and focused actor; it helps as one then only directs energy towards creating the scene. He has delivered a good presence on the show. I am glad my track flows with his character.”
The positive reception of Tanaav Season 2 Volume 2 has fueled Gitikka’s enthusiasm. “Of course, elated. It is a win-win for me. Also, when a show on Kashmir does well, it only goes to reaffirm that Kashmir is ours, Kashmiris are ours, and Kashmiriyat is also ours. Here’s hoping for Tanaav Season 3, may tales on Kashmir be told till the impact resonates with all stakeholders.”
In addition to her powerful work in Tanaav, Gitikka has previously delighted audiences with her roles in Aamir Khan Productions’ “Laal Singh Chaddha” and the acclaimed OTT series “Aarya”, alongside Sushmita Sen. With a diverse career that bridges film and television, Gitikka is committed to telling stories that matter, enriching the narrative of Kashmir and beyond.
With “Tanaav” cementing its status as a landmark show in the Indian web series, Gitikka’s portrayal of Nafeesa stands out as a powerful testament to the experience of Kashmiri women, embodying resilience, strength, and hope for the future. As the journey continues, audiences eagerly anticipate where the story will lead next.
