The very brilliant Malayalam actor Nivin Pauly’s 2019 masterpiece Maothon where he played a gay gangster is available on Zee5.
Nivin has mixed feelings about the OTT. “The beauty of cinema is to watch a movie in a theatre itself to enjoy the real feel of it and as actors that’s what we all dream of, to see it all on the big screen.”
But having said that,Nivin cannot ignore the current Covid situation . “With the current conditions things are getting difficult for producers and for some of them digital is the way forward ,But honestly I still believe we all will go back to theatres to watch movies when the Covid-19 situation improves.”
Moothon enjoyed the challenge of playing a gay character in Moothon. “It was a risk. But a risk well worth taking. As an actor I’m hungry for new experiences. It took me no time at all to say yes to my character Akbar in Moothon. To me it didn’t matter whether the character is straight or gay, white or grey…Akbar was a challenge any actor would love to take up.”
Nivin was not bothered about his image. “I didn’t think about anything except the challenge of playing the character. I was sure my fans would go with my convictions. I surrendered completely to my director Geetu Mohandas’ vision.”
It took this method actor some time to get out of character. “Getting into the dark violent traumatized character was easier than getting out of it. I took a break after the film to spend time with my newly-born daughter. Being around her helped me retain my sanity. For months I was just home playing with my child, feeling normal.”
Mothoon has emboldened Nivin as an actor. “It has prompted me to explore the complexities of the human character. There is love and violence, compassion and rage within all of us. What comes out depends on what we tap. This is the spirit my character in Moothon represents.”
