Pretentious Movie Reviews was two guys f**king around with a camera and a laptop, but Laakhon Mein Ek involved a lot of responsibility: Biswa Kalyan Rath

He is quintessentially quirky, intelligent and has the gift of the gab. His right ‘wit-i-tude’ has helped him create a niche of his own, making him cut above the rest, turning his fans into loyal admirers.

Introducing Biswa Kalyan Rath…vivacious, versatile and replete with vivid content imagery. His real life story is similar to a ‘coming of age’ Bollywood film. A young middle class boy treading on the ‘passion path’ , moving away from dreams woven by societal norms and embracing with valour his heart’s desire.

A stand-up comedian, writer and performer, Biswa’s professional graph has taken an impressive hike from his earlier Pretentious Movie Reviews days to the recent web genius, Lakhon Mein Ek (Amazon Prime)-his brainchild.

In an exclusive conversation with IndianWikiMedia, Biswa answers to some of our queries. Read on…

First of all, thanks for your time. Biswa, how has the response been to your creation Lakhon Mein Ek…

Response has been overwhelmingly positive. A lot of people have found catharsis through the story. Lot of people have written to me letters of thanks. The show has sparked many conversations on the education system as well.

The story stems from your individual experiences or a societal observation?

It’s inspired by my personal experiences. I went to such an institute and it is based on the experiences of me and my friends there.

How has the journey been from the amazingly engaging Pretentious Movie Reviews to Lakhon Mein Ek?

It’s been a blur to be honest. I feel PMR was two guys f**king around with a camera and a laptop, but Laakhon Mein Ek involved a lot of responsibility and a huge team, so they are two very different experiences.

What do you prefer more…performing (stand-up comedy) or writing?

I prefer both equally.

If you have to explain Biswa in one word..that would be?

Biswa… (smiles).

How do you see the digital content space evolving in the next couple years? Will it eventually find precedence over television?

I think TV will remain for quite a while in India, especially for live events and news. But digital content will slowly take over in long form format. We will see a lot more density and quality of shows in the years to come.

There is lot of ‘uncalled for’ s*x and cuss in digital content…your take on it…

Don’t like it, don’t watch it. This isn’t TV. Choice is entirely yours.

Censorship in web entertainment: yes or no?

Certification should exist, not censorship.

Any comments on the buzz word ‘intolerance’?

What has been the biggest learning in your creative journey so far?

Enjoy the process rather than just the end product. Make peace with boredom.

Any regrets?

None.

How do you keep yourself updated in the competitive space?

By not thinking about competition but about making the audience happy.

Youtube or OTT? Your preferred platform?

Whichever is convenient for the audience.
