This YouTuber is a 24-year-old Indian with a massive following of almost 2 million subscribers on YouTube and half a million followers on his Facebook page. Five years ago, at the time when other girls and boys his age were still figuring out what to do, Dhruv Rathee created his YouTube channel with an aim to “educate people on social, political and environmental issues facing India, wishing to incite critical thinking and awareness among masses”. We are not even joking. That’s what his YouTube’s ‘About’ section says.
Today, he is a leading Indian YouTuber who his addressing and analyzing controversial current and political issues. His Hindi-language videos are more of than not critiques of our very own Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. He was just a photography and filmmaking student who started following politics in just 2011-12.
From there, he has gone on to become a part of those independent operators who are dedicated to checking facts, busting myths and being at loggerheads with the ruling government. In the short span that he has been online, he has also faced his share of trolls and haters for simply discussing important issues and voicing his opinions. In fact, last year in May, a police complaint was filed against him by a self-declared Bharatiya Janta Party volunteer.
However, these haters are overshadowed by the recognition that he has received when he was nominated at the 2018 Outlook social Media Awards under the Inspiration of the Year Award category. He is also frequently seen on TV news debates as a frequent panelist.
