The Ministry of Electronics and Information (MeitY) has directed Google and Apple to remove TikTok, the wildly popular Chinese short-video mobile App, from their App stores, as per media reports.
The Madras High Court had earlier banned fresh downloads of TikTok and the Supreme Court too refused to stay the ban. The case is up for hearing in the Madras High Court, after which the SC will decide on its fate on 22nd April.
TikTok has been criticized by various quarters recently for aiding the spread of content that borders on nudity and obscenity.
India is one of the largest users of the App, and the recent Government move will hit downloads of TikTok hard.
