Amazon Prime Video today confirmed that Irrfan Khan has been signed on as the lead actor for its upcoming Indian Amazon Original – The Ministry. Created by Gursimran Khamba of AIB, The Ministry is a political satire set in contemporary India’s corridors of power, and is set to launch globally in 2018 exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. With this collaboration, Irrfan Khan is geared to leave yet another global imprint on Prime Video across 200 countries and territories.
Vijay Subramaniam, Director, Content, Amazon Prime Video India, said, “Our comedy offering has been widely appreciated by the audience and we are proud to say that we are only getting started. After a phenomenal response to our licensed comedy shows, we are excited to launch our very own Amazon Original in the comedy space. We are further strengthening our offering by collaborating with the best content creators of the genre and roping in one of the most versatile Indian actors with massive global appeal.”
Elated about the announcement, Irrfan Khan said “I am looking forward to this great collaboration with Amazon and AIB – both have content that makes me very excited to work with them. It will be a great experience to be working on this show which will be very topical and funny and will release globally on Amazon Prime Video.”
Gursimran Khamba from AIB said “Irrfan told us that he wanted to be part of this show when he first heard about it. But because of certain complications it didn’t work out. Then one night I met him at a party where he took me aside, stared into my eyes and said “I want this”. And we all know how hard it is to resist Irrfan’s eyes.”
After their smash hit collaborations on the Bollywood Party Song and Dank Irrfan: a series of memes on the internet, Irrfan Khan is now all set to collaborate for the third time with the comedy collective All India Bakchod (AIB). With Irrfan being cast as a lead in The Ministry, he is set to make his mark on another global platform, with Amazon Prime Video being one of the most sought after VOD services in the world. This show will continue Irrfan’s forays into various fields of entertainment making him one of the few stars who does not shy away from experimentation, regardless of the medium. Political satire has seen very few mainstream efforts in India and The Ministry is an ambitious attempt to combine humor with political commentary.
The Ministry is the story of a washed up narcissistic Bollywood actor who is unwittingly appointed as a placeholder Union Culture Minister. Despite a crippling bureaucracy, political gaffes and a team of misfits, he yearns to be loved by the masses once again.
