The year 2021 has offered a mixed bag with respect to the entertainment industry. Though it was a major struggle for the creative mindsets with a lot of halts/ delays in the filming of the big OTT projects, the ultimate result of them all has been fascinating for many!! The year has seen a lot of ups and downs owing to the second wave of the pandemic hitting the Nation big time. But we have also seen some amazing concepts seeing the light of the day.
As we end the year 2021 and welcome the year 2022 with more positivity, we at IWMBuzz.com give you our list of the Most Popular Web Series for the year 2021.
So this is what we as well as masses liked when it came to the web series.
Aarya 2 (Disney Plus Hotstar): Sushmita Sen and her aura of being the perfect performer grew immensely with this new season of Aarya. Aarya resumed her unfinished duties from where she had left it off in the first season. This time, Aarya was back with a bigger heart, of course, clad with all the vulnerabilities as a mother, which only grew as her strength in the battle to come. In the fight that Aarya put up to redeem her family’s safety was extremely gripping.
Aranyak (Netflix): The mighty web series saw the return of the fascinating actress Raveena Tandon. And what a comeback it has been for her!! Aranyak has been a win-win story for both the leads Raveena Tandon and Parambrata Chattopadhyay. The story dealt with the fear that existed in the mountain range of Sironah, caused by the existence of a leopard-man, and the dangerous deaths caused by it over the years.
Bombay Begums (Netflix): This series which marked the return of Pooja Bhatt explored the lives of five ambitious women from various walks of life who worked out their dreams, desires, disappointments and much more while they lead their life in Mumbai. The series was heralded for its presentability of contemporary urban India and the manner in which it put across the strengths and vulnerabilities of the women.
Candy (Voot Select): Candy the nail-biting web series on Voot Select which had a great ensemble cast lead by Ronit Roy and Richa Chadha was loved for the kind of twists it provided. From an unknown scary demon-hunting prey in the woods to the dangerous game of drugs, the mysterious plot was heralded for its amazing concept, tantalizing climax and of course for the great performances.
Grahan (Disney Plus Hotstar): Grahan which was inspired by the Satya Vyas novel Chaurasi, very aptly traverses the two worlds which are separated by many decades. The only connect between the past and the present is the kind of intriguing truth that lies in them. The series saw great performances coming from Pavan Malhotra, Zoya Hussein, Wamiqa Gabbi and many others. The series has been well-received with it being appreciated by all age groups of viewers.
Special OPS 1.5: The Himmat Story (Disney Plus Hotstar): Again, this Hotstar series showed us how the grit and strength within Himmat Singh were developed and nurtured at a very young age. Special OPS 1.5 showed us a Himmat Singh story that dwelled on the inner resilience and courage of Himmat as he voyaged on his mission to deal with the crime that existed in his times. The series also showed us the tough life of RAW agents and the kind of sacrifices they had to undergo to keep a stronghold on their secretive careers. The series saw great performances coming from Kay Kay Menon, Aftab Shivdasani, Vinay Pathak etc.
Sunflower (ZEE5): This black comedy series which revolved around a murder mystery based in a middle-class housing society in Mumbai called Sunflower, had some gripping sequences that created huge curiosity and intrigue. The series had a stellar cast that included Sunil Grover, Ranvir Shorey, Girish Kulkarni, Ashish Vidyarthi etc. The series was heralded for the good performances coming from the major cast.
Tabbar Only Family Matters (SonyLIV): This gripping series helmed by towering performances coming from Pavan Malhotra, Supriya Pathak and many others, talked about how a law-abiding man could go to any drastic extent possible to save his family from getting doomed. This intriguing tale had a strong sense of story-telling with a fabulous mix of experienced and new actors doing well for themselves.
The Family Man 2 (Amazon Prime): Manoj Bajpayee’s The Family Man was back on Amazon Prime with a Season 2. The gripping thriller had the added punch and flavour of exhibiting a new shade in actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s acting repertoire. The story plot was gripping to the core, and the execution of the action scenes was top-notch. The series was heralded for the best of performances coming from its prime cast.
The Last Hour (Amazon Prime): Starring Sanjay Kapoor, Raima Sen, Karma Takapa, Tenzein Choden, the web series revolving around the life of a mysterious shaman who talked to the spirits of dead people, to know the reason for the death. The intriguing drama was layered with a lot of gut-wrenching intrigues. The conceptualization of this tough project, and the kind of amalgamation it had of the kind of actors from the Hindi industry and the actors from the North-East, brought about a beautifully crafted web series.
The other noteworthy web series that certainly did well and was appreciated by the masses were Ravi Dubey’s classy masterpiece on Matsya Kaand (MX Player), Karan Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti’s return in the web version as Qubool Hai 2.0 (ZEE5), the web series dedicated to the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Pavitra Rishta 2.0 (ALTBalaji and ZEE5), the interesting web version of Bigg Boss titled Bigg Boss OTT (Voot Select), and the family-drama driven web series Crashh (ALTBalaji)
