On the eve of International Women’s Day, Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s directorial debut Cakewalk achieves something which was totally unexpected. While the film is still receiving laurels from media and film fraternity since it has been premiered on Rishtey Cineplex HD on February 17 and currently streaming on Voot, the best compliment came from celebrity chef and Masterchef runner’s up Doyel Sarangi when she connected with Ram Kamal on social media after watching the film.
She said, ” Yesterday night I was watching a short film Cakewalk. I don’t know suddenly I was getting so much excited and happy… Because this story or concept is exactly my story.” Hold your horses. There is no plagiarism or copyright infringement case in this story. Doyel further clarified her stance, she added, “I just went into my flashback the year (2013-2014) when I was in MasterChef India season 3 and struggling with others to prove myself as a good chef and finally I was amongst the finalists. Yes, I am not the winner but yes I’m a Chef now.
And trust me I was watching exactly my story, through Shilpa Sen’s journey.”
Doyel Sarangi, the 30-year-old housewife from Kolkata who emerged as a runner up on Masterchef India season 3, is an inspirational story, indeed. She has been cooking since the age of seven, which she continued even after marriage. It is her sheer talent and love for food which saw her participating and going till the finale of the cookery show. She competed with Ripudaman Handa from Delhi and Navneet Rastogi from Varanasi for the coveted title.
She further added, “Director Ram Kamal Mukherjee made this film for people like us and trust me this film is an inspiration for all those who follow their passion. Esha Deol as Shilpa who was a housewife but she follows her passion and becomes a passionate chef. Though she also didn’t win the MasterChef show and she is also runner-up, but who cares? Passion makes you perfect if you follow it with honesty. Esha is looking so young and beautiful in each and every frame. Ram Kamal Mukherjee touched my heart, would love to watch a sequel of Cakewalk from him!”
When IWMBuzz contacted director Ram Kamal Mukherjee he said, “I just shared this news with Esha and even she sounded very happy. In fact she thanked Doyel for being such a sport. I am happy the women across all section have loved this film. I meet people at cafeterias, theatres and malls where they come up to me and congratulate me on Cakewalk. Just like Doyel, another celebrated chef Manzilat Fatima, from the Royal family of Wajid Ali Shah wrote a wonderful note on Cakewalk. She is also a housewife who is running a terrace fine dine in Kolkata and feels that it’s her story too. My mother-in-law was telling me that she watched a film and while stepping out of a theatre she found a group of women discussing Cakewalk inside the elevator. As a filmmaker what else can I expect from God. This film is blessed, and now the expectation is higher!”
Guess, Ram Kamal summed it up rightly, now it’s time for us to wait and watch the next big announcement from Esha Deol Takhtani and Ram Kamal. A feature film, maybe?
