RSVP Movies, a well-known content production house under the leadership of Mr. Ronnie Screwvala, is renowned for presenting captivating and enjoyable content to the audience. Their latest release is a biopic based on the inspiring life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, featuring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role and Arjun Rampal in a pivotal role. The film has been making headlines due to an ongoing legal battle with the CBFC over the necessary cuts to be made before its release. Yesterday, RSVP presented the remaining cuts in court, and the argument will resume today at 2:30 PM.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approved the film with an A certificate but requested the makers to make 21 cuts, such as removing specific dialogues, the movie’s disclaimer, and its title. In response, RSVP Movies by Ronnie Screwvala filed an appeal to the Bombay High Court under Section 5C of the Cinematograph Act. The appeal argued that the cuts violated Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution and were not covered under the Cinematograph Act.
In the most recent update, there was a hearing where the RSVP team presented arguments to the honorable judge about the remaining cuts. The team began their argument with the 5th cut and went all the way to the 21st cut. They explained that each cut was based on thorough documentation and research to ensure a well-made film. Despite the CBFC’s insistence that the cuts were necessary, RSVP Movies stood firm in their opposition to keep the film’s premise intact.
Additionally, the Additional Solicitor General Anil C. Singh, who was representing CBFC, has retired from his position. As a result, CBFC’s lawyer requested more time, but the court denied the request. The court has scheduled the next hearing for today at 2:30 PM.
The Jaswant Singh Khalra biopic is directed by Honey Trehan and while Diljit plays the titular role, Arjun Rampal also has a pivotal part in it.
