On August 12, the elephants at New Delhi’s National Zoological Park (NZP) were given a “special treat” to commemorate World Elephant Day. “Elephants in NZP were provided special food today on the occasion of World Elephant Day,” the National Zoological Park in the national capital, which is home to two Asian elephants – Laxmi and Hira – wrote on its official social media account alongside a photo of the treat and the animals. The big animals were given a delicious supper on World Elephant Day, which included melons, apples, and coconuts, among other things.

Meanwhile, the Bannerghatta Zoo in Karnataka declared, “On World Elephant Day, BBP is launching a new programme to engage residents in providing services to the zoo in the form of fodder harvesting through donation services at the zoo.” “The mahouts will feed the collected fodder to the elephants.” “Chronic foot injuries caused by India’s captive elephants,” according to Wildlife SOS. The organization announced on its official Instagram account that numerous animals have been transported to care with “horrible” foot ailments.

In the meantime, on World Elephant Day, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasized the importance of identifying areas where human-elephant conflict exists and then working to eliminate it. Yadav emphasized the importance of elephant conservation in his address. He stated, “Conservation cannot happen through theories, we have to reach them, we have to believe that locals, as well as departments both, are the trustees. We need to identify the areas where human-elephant conflict exists. And one should visit there in person. We have to keep working on our policy to decrease the conflict.”

Minister Yadav had previously taken to Twitter, writing, “India has a large population of wild Asian elephants because we revere our wildlife. On #WorldElephantDay2021, will release the population estimation protocol for all-India elephant and tiger population estimation in 2022 by 9:30 am.” He also released the methodology for the exercise of converging elephant and tiger population estimation, as well as photos from the event.
