Kerala’s police officers appear to be in desperate need of public relations training. A video depicting a Kerala Police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) punching a guy onboard the Maveli Express has gone viral on the internet, shocking viewers and prompting severe condemnation. This comes only days after the state police were chastised for their treatment of citizens after some of their officers allegedly compelled a foreign tourist in Kollam to empty the liquor bottles he had purchased from a state-run alcohol vending machine.
On Sunday night, the latest incident occurred aboard a Maveli Express sleeper compartment in Kannur. ASI Pramod has been recognised as the errant cop in question. He asked a passenger in one of the train’s sleeper cars to show him his ticket. ASI Pramod slapped the passenger when he was looking for his ticket. The cop then kicked and knocked the passenger out.
The train passenger can be seen laying on the floor near the coach’s entrance in video footage that has become popular on social media. Several times, the officer was observed kicking him. According to reports, the chief minister’s office (CMO) has requested an explanation.
Meanwhile, a police officer has been suspended by the state administration in connection with an incident in which a foreign visitor was forced to pour liquor from bottles in the presence of a police team. On social media, a video of the incident had gone viral. According to reports, after the foreign national failed to show the bills for the booze bottles he had purchased at a BEVCO vendor for New Year’s celebrations, police officers forced him to empty them. Muhammed Riyas, the state tourism PA minister, called the incident “unfortunate.”
