Tornadoes, wildfires, and volcanic eruptions, to mention just a few, are just a few of the exceptional and horrifying weather events that have already occurred in 2022. These calamities are anticipated to occur more often if significant action is not taken to mitigate the effects of climate change.
In a widely shared video, a significant sandstorm struck the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in China’s Qinghai Province on July 20, 2022, spreading a shadow over the towns and cities in the area.
As footage showed the storm rising over the horizon, advancing towards heavily populated areas, and shutting out the sun, winds of 53 km/h (33 mph) blasted up clouds of sand. According to reports, the sandstorm took place for a total of four hours.
In the end, there were no reported storm-related fatalities. According to a second report from the South China Morning Post, visibility in certain towns in the Qinghai province fell to 200 meters during the storm’s peak. Even the Sun has been destroyed.
AccuWeather reports that parts of the Qinghai province are typically dry. The northwestern region of Qinghai province, which makes up a sizable percentage of the province, is a desert. Forecasters believe that sand from these arid or desert areas was likely pushed into the air by thunderstorms that were building in China’s western west midweek.
Europe has also had extremely high temperatures this year. The heat wave aggravated the dry conditions in Portugal, Spain, and portions of France, which led to flames raging over the area. On July 13, flames engulfed more than 3,000 acres of forest in Leiria, Portugal, reaching temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius.
