Now that the new year has come, we can finally learn more about Hogwarts Legacy, Portkey Games’ long-awaited Harry Potter role-playing game. We first saw it in 2020 with a visually stunning trailer, which showed students studying sorcery at Hogwarts while simultaneously taming magical beasts and solving dungeon puzzles, just like in the classic Harry Potter games. However, Hogwarts Legacy is set in 1890, several years before Harry Potter and the majority of the book’s characters were born. Dumbledore would be the only character still alive at this point, although even then, he’d merely be a kid—perhaps a Hogwarts student?
In any case, the change of location should allow you to construct your own unique pupil with whom to explore the planet and learn ancient magic’s secrets. In March 2022, a big gameplay reveal and behind-the-scenes look at Hogwarts Legacy revealed a lot of new details, including character customization, companion characters, and a lot of magical fighting. It had been scheduled for 2021; however, it was revealed in January of that year that it would be postponed to the next year. “We are giving the game the time it requires in order to provide the best possible experience for all Wizarding World and gaming lovers,” Portkey Games said.
Although the initial reveal video for Hogwarts Legacy merely gave us a taste of what the big wizarding RPG would involve, it was clear that it would be a visually spectacular game. In the initial teaser, we only saw a limited portion of combat and lore, but we now know a lot more about both. Portkey Games described Hogwarts Legacy as an “immersive, open-world action RPG” when it was initially revealed. “[Players] will increase their character’s abilities as they master strong spells, hone fighting skills, and choose friends to aid them to face off against deadly adversaries,” according to Portkey Games.
“In addition, players will face tasks and circumstances that will force them to make difficult decisions and decide what they stand for.”
