It has been amazing to cover the Steam Deck over the past few months, given how much the software has changed. You could read Jared’s review of it here if you missed it at launch. Since nearly every game I’ve played on Steam Deck functions as it should, testing both new and old titles has been a great experience. Many people probably want to see how newer games perform on Valve’s portable, even though I’ve already covered the greatest Steam Deck titles and even the best Steam Deck games that aren’t compatible with consoles. I put prepared a list of the top new games to play on Steam Deck after playing a lot of recently published games there both before and after release. With a few exceptions for games that were previously on consoles but were only recently converted to PC, this feature will only include games that have been released this year.

Rollerdrome

One of the video games that gave me the idea for this segment was Rollerdrome. OlliOlli World on Steam Deck and Switch had previously made an impression on me, so I wasn’t as surprised by Roll7’s success this time around. On the other hand, Rollerdrome came as a huge surprise. The third-person shooter/skateboarder hybrid features a charming, stylish look, fine controls, excellent music, and a compelling gameplay loop. It is a challenging and unexpected single-player adventure. It runs well right out of the box on Steam Deck as well, and lately, it’s been my go-to game for a break.

ANNO: Mutationem

When ANNO: Mutationem was first announced, it seemed like a game I’d love, but seeing a cameo from VA-11 Hall-Jill A’s is what convinced me to purchase the PS5 version of the title. Despite certain issues, I had a lot of fun playing ANNO: Mutationem on the PS5. ANNO: Mutationem is a terrific experience right out of the box on Steam Deck. I’ve now played the action-adventure game on both the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, and playing it on a portable device is an incredible delight. ANNO: Mutationem, a fantastic cyberpunk adventure with stunning graphics, is a must-have on Steam Deck.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

After making its Switch premiere last year, Monster Hunter Rise debuted on Steam earlier this year. The massive game expansion Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak debuted on Switch and Steam a few months ago, and I played the full expansion and postgame content that was made available for review on Switch with almost any problems. It has since received more upgrades to add new enemies, missions, events, and more. If you want the best portable experience right now, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, one of the best games of the year, is best played on Steam Deck.

Rogue Legacy 2

Rogue Legacy 2 is among the top independent games of this year on any platform, much as Neon White. Rogue Legacy 2 expands on the first game’s base to seem even more contemporary. I had hoped Spelunky 2 would fulfill my expectations, but it doesn’t feel as much like a breakthrough as Rogue Legacy 2. The stunning levels and fresh visual aesthetic of Rogue Legacy 2 make it simple to recommend. The Steam Deck gives the greatest and sole official portable experience up until we have a Switch or smartphone port.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

Because this is a PC port or a PS5 remaster of a PS4 game that was released a few years ago, I wasn’t sure whether I should include it. I absolutely enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man, but for the terribly forced stealth bullshit in the game. While I don’t think the DLC is as good as the base game, it is still a fantastic package. Replaying it on the PS5 was also fantastic. The efficiency with which Steam Deck runs it impressed me. Being approved by Valve for the Steam Deck pre-release was undoubtedly a positive indication. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is an excellent PC port that really shows off what the Steam Deck can do.
