Films based on video games have gotten largely unfavorable reviews, with scripts and lack of innovation being common complaints. Some, on the other hand, have developed cult followings. Only three video game films got a “fresh” Tomatometer rating on a 2020 list prepared by Rotten Tomatoes: The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), Detective Pikachu (2019), and Sonic the Hedgehog (2020). (2020). The best-reviewed film based on a video game is Werewolves Within (2021).

An arcade game villain who aspires to be a hero decides to leave the game to pursue his ambition. Several licensed video game characters, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man, and Ryu, make guest appearances.

Boss Level (2021) 

A former soldier is caught in a never-ending time loop in which he dies over and over again. It’s a film adaptation of video gaming tropes.

Black Heaven (2010)

Unbeknownst to him, a young man falls in love with a strange girl. He is drawn into “Black Hole,” a dark, enigmatic video game world full of avatars with deadly serious real-life ambitions.
