Fortnite is a video game franchise set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies. It was created by Epic Games and operated on the Unreal Engine, the company’s trademark. Fortnite: Save the World, a team-based survival shooter, and Fortnite: Battle Royale, a last-person-standing game, are the two titles that now belong under the Fortnite banner. The former was released as a paid early access edition in July 2017. It was believed that a free-to-play version would be released in 2019, but Epic has now stated that it will remain a ‘premium experience.’ PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X are all supported.

The game was controversially removed from the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store in August 2020 due to an ongoing financial dispute between Epic Games and Apple. Apple’s (and Google’s) 30 per cent cut of in-app revenues, according to the Fortnite developer, is unreasonable. Because it gave consumers discounts on purchases made outside of the app, the game was finally removed. After previously only being available as a direct download, Fortnite was only published on the Play Store in April 2020.

The game’s future as a mobile app is in doubt, according to Sensor Tower, leaving a $1.2 billion gap in the market. In October 2020, a US judge ruled that Apple’s move was legal and that any revenue lost was Epic’s fault. A subscription model is being advocated, according to questionnaires handed out to users. There are still downloads available from third-party Google Play stores.
