Choi Young-jae (Korean: born 17 September 1996), better known as Youngjae, is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actor. He is the lead singer of the Korean boy band Got7.
Choi dreamed of becoming a singer when he was a toddler when he sang alongside his elder brother. After joining the military, he enrolled in a practical music academy in his hometown of Mokpo to learn more professionally, and in 2011, he received the Vocal Excellence Award at the Mokpo Youth Music Festival. He became a trainee after JYP Entertainment held a closed audition in the academy in 2013.
Choi was admitted to the project group to become JYPE’s new boy band after one month of training in Seoul. Following a total of 7 months of training, he debuted as the main vocalist of the seven-member boy group Got7 with the single “Girls Girls Girls,” released on January 16, 2014, from the group’s first EP Got It? Choi revealed his ambition of becoming a music therapist shortly after his debut.
Since 2016, he has started creating music and lyrics under the alias Ars, beginning with “Rewind” on Got7’s extended-release Flight Log: Departure.
Choi worked on the song “Victim of Love” with Sanjoy and Elliott Yamin in 2017, and he recorded “I’m All Ears” with Park Ji-min for the Life Insurance Social Philanthropy Foundation’s adolescent suicide prevention campaign in 2018.
