The thing about hair removal is this: The procedure of removing undesirable hair, or the resolution to do so, has long been a cornerstone of beauty and self-care regimens. Here’s a little history lesson: Waxing is claimed to have originated in ancient Egypt when women used beeswax and sugar-based waxes to remove body hair (among other items). Threading is another ancient technique that dates back over 6,000 years and originated in the Middle East or Asia. What about the threading vs. waxing debate? We’re guessing the debate has been going on for at least as long.

Let’s get this party started: Is waxing or threading better? No contest, we say: it’s waxing all the way.

Waxing removes hair from the follicle by applying hard or soft wax to the follicle and quickly pulling it out in the opposite direction of hair development, often with strips. Threading is a technique that involves entwining, twisting, and rolling a cotton thread to pull hair from the root, either individually or in rows. However, due to the process of threading, there is very little space for mistakes. To avoid nicks, the skin must be stretched taut enough. Furthermore, if the procedure is given by an inexperienced technician, the hairs are more likely to break. Waxing, we feel, is kinder to the hair follicle.

Threading is also more unpleasant since it takes longer. When we get our brows threaded, it feels like snapping, sharp pinches. Our eyes water and it irritates our nose…it wasn’t nice, to say the least. We’d rather “tear off the band-aid” swiftly with one rapid waxing pass, as the term goes. (As a side point, but a good reminder: the more waxing you do, the less unpleasant it gets.) Why? Because each time you remove hair from its root, you’re harming the hair follicle in a positive way. So here’s to sticking to your waxing schedule.)
