The Met Gala 2021 is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, often known as “fashion’s biggest night out.” The event attracts celebrities, young creatives, and industry leaders. During the years 2021 and 2022, the Costume Institute will organize its first two-part exhibition on the theme of American fashion. Part one, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” will debut on September 18, 2021, in the Anna Wintour Costume Center, and will be on display until May 5, 2022, when “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” debuts in the American Wing’s period rooms. Both exhibits are scheduled to run until September 5, 2022. Save this page for updates on the exhibitions and charity gala, as well as Vogue’s coverage of past events’ most memorable highlights.
It’s been termed “the Oscars of fashion” because celebrities and designers constantly go all out to produce genuinely unforgettable red-carpet moments. Following 18 months of cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s gala was even more special than normal, as the world’s most prominent supermodels, actresses, athletes, and influencers made their way up those renowned steps for the first time in a long time.
The theme for this year’s exhibition, ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ or ‘American Independence,’ was chosen to commemorate the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary and to explore a contemporary vocabulary of American fashion. We spotted both evident and delicate allusions to American fashion, culture, and history in the gala attire, and many American designers were featured at the occasion.
