Dal Dhokli is a traditional Gujarati one-pot meal recipe prepared using toor dal and wheat dough. It is a one-pot lunch or dinner option. It does not need any rice or flatbread on the side, as it contains both. It is a perfect fulfilling dish for the winter season and can be enjoyed when it’s served piping hot!

Dal Dhokli can be made on a daily basis with leftovers dal and roti/chapatis. You can use the leftovers or you can simply follow the traditional recipe.

Let’s check out the recipe below!

For making the Dal you need:

½ cup toor dal, rinsed, 1½ cup water, 1 tsp oil, 2 tbsp peanuts, 1 tsp ghee / clarified butter, 1 tsp mustard, ½ tsp cumin/jeera, 1 chilli, broken, a pinch of hing, curry leaves, 1 tomato, finely chopped, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, 1½ cup water.

Spices like ¼ tsp turmeric, ¾ tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder, ¼ tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ¼ tsp garam masala.

A small piece jaggery / gud, ¾ tsp salt, 1 tsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped.

For the dhokli you need:

1 cup wheat flour/atta, ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder, ¼ tsp ajwain powder, ½ tsp salt, 2 tsp oil, ½ cup water

Procedure:

In a large Kadai heat 1 tsp ghee and wait until it’s hot. Add 1 tomato chopped, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste and sauté the tomatoes until they’re soft and mushy.

Now add the cooked daal and 1½ cup water and mix well keeping the consistency as required.

Now add the spices, ¼ tsp turmeric, ¾ tsp chilli powder, ¼ tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, and ¼ tsp garam masala.

Combine everything well to incorporate every flavour.

Now you can add the remaining ingredients that are cooked peanuts, a small piece of jaggery(gud), ¾ tsp salt, and 1 tsp lemon juice.

Once you see a boil in the dal, drop in the chapati pieces and give a good mix well.

Cover it and boil for about 10-15 minutes or until you know the dhokla is cooked entirely and gets a good taste of Dal.

Add 2 tbsp coriander and enjoy dal dhokli with hot steamed rice or just as it is. It’s soulful! Give it a try and enjoy the chilly weather with it!
