A consumer expert has provided instructions on how to use a common kitchen vegetable to keep bread fresher for longer.

There is nothing better than enjoying a fluffy sandwich for lunch or buttering a fresh slice of buttered bread in the morning. However, bread can soon go bad, necessitating our frequent discarding of the moldy loaf.

Most people freeze their bread as a defense against this, but thawing it never completely restores the same level of freshness. Fortunately, one expert has provided his best advice for keeping bread fresher for longer, which could help you save roughly £31 a year on loaves, according to the Mirror.

Tom Church, the co-founder of the money-saving website LatestDeals.co.uk, revealed his tip for keeping bread with a stick of celery, which can be purchased for as little as 49 cents per stalk at Sainsbury’s or 47 pence at Tesco.

Eight to nine stalks are usually found in a bunch of celery, so the cost per loaf works out to about 6p per stalk. Tom advised: “If you’ve ever opened your loaf of bread to make a sandwich, only to discover that it’s gone moldy, consider placing a stick of celery into the bread bag.”

“It may sound odd, but the bread will absorb the moisture provided by the celery and, in turn, remain fresh. Your loaf won’t become dry and moldy at the same rate, so your chances of getting a sandwich together will increase.”

By using the additional celery sticks from the bundle, the technique also offers you a nutritious snack choice. Tom adds that he extends the shelf life of strawberries by up to two weeks by using a vinegar trick.
