In terms of international relations, this concept of choices being taken in response to immediate political exigencies and requirements is known as “bumper car diplomacy.” Today, it could appear as though our lives are practicing this craft. We believe we could be missing the unifying force that would give our ordinary deeds a touch of nobility or grandeur. “We moderate, we modernize till our nightmare is a wonderful existence,” sings artist Emily Haines. We adjust, settle, and modify as the circumstance dictates, but for what purpose? Then why?

Obviously, this is not hell. We’ll refrain from using exaggeration. What’s the overall meaning? It comes down to strategy. It is a strategic undertaking to figure out how to create or discover a driving force. And it is precisely this issue that we are attempting to address by posing the grand, noble, and unattainable question, “What is the meaning of it all?” The meaning is rougher. It takes too much time. The final resource we have is time. We just have to hope that the path we discover will lead us in the right direction, toward significance, or toward anything else.

Our response thus far has been possession. Because independence is a joke, we tell you. We don’t merely mean that we all belong to a community and that we should support one another or that we are all inherently related; we don’t know if any of that is true. In any case, it is irrelevant to this.

Making our life into something more than a series of related occurrences is what matters. Thus, we have evolved into a possessed people. It has a far wider scope than ownership. We are true to that extent. Nobody is our owner. We are not property. Humans are driven to feel completely at home with one another. Ownership is a hegemon’s unsuccessful attempt to forge another’s identity. Possession occurs when someone effectively constructs your identity, frequently with both parties’ cooperation. Possession is most obvious in love relationships.
