Have you ever had to make an out-of-the-blue request? It’s a terrifying, nerve-wracking, and inconvenient experience. Worst of all, no one has ever provided us with any genuine advice on the matter. Nobody probably sat us down in high school and gave us a step-by-step guide to dating the way they taught us mathematics.

So it’s no surprise that asking someone out is a difficult social task. Small chat irritates us. We despise it so much that we’ll avoid people entirely to avoid having to deal with the same vexing inquiries.

Instead, consider the following options:

Inquire about their opinions.
“Can you recommend an excellent restaurant near here?” “Is it worthwhile to join this gym?” “What did you think of it?” This is an excellent approach to see whether you have something in common.

Play around with it.
“I’ve got an emergency.” [There is a dramatic pause.] I’m undecided between the Caffè Americano and the Caffè Latte. “Do you think I should get one of these?” Bonus: If you’re both in a coffee shop, it’s safe to assume the other person is a coffee addict as well, and they’ll probably tell you about their favorite drinks.

Be considerate.
“Where would you travel if you could board a ship tomorrow and go anyplace in the world?” “What would your superpower be if you were a superhero?” Much more fascinating than inquiring about their college major!

Request a favor from them.
“Hey, could you please keep my jacket for a moment while I go get these drinks?”

My real wish is that this is the start of a long and fruitful dating career for you and that you never stop improving.
