Marriage is a fundamental pillar of society that brings people together. It religiously binds two persons and their families together in the sacred bond of marriage. Our marriage rites and traditions have been followed for centuries, and families have welcomed the concept of arranged weddings because, as we all know, “parents know best.”
According to studies, a large majority of people (80-85%) choose planned marriages because of matchmakers, trustworthy matrimonial sites, and parents. In India, very few people choose love marriage for a variety of reasons, including religious disagreements, cultural disparities, family disagreements, and other crucial issues. According to reports, many agree to arranged marriages even if they initially wish to marry their loved ones. This raises the possibility that arranged marriages are superior and more powerful in Indian society than love weddings.
Marriage brings people with similar values, cultures, and customs together. This communal institution unites not just two mature individuals but also their families. Since ancient times, most individuals have had their parents arrange weddings to unite two families, societies, cultures, and governments. This custom has been practiced since the beginning and continues to be practiced today.
Many people would rather have an arranged marriage without any pressure, just so they may coexist peacefully. Love marriages frequently result in numerous issues and conflicts, and many studies believe that these couples have a higher divorce rate. Indian youths appear to have complete faith in their elders’ ability to select a compatible spouse. Particularly if the partners come from different castes or religions, couples must work extra hard to win over their relatives. Because couples and families in arranged marriages have the same status, financial security, cultural identity, and opinions, there is a very low possibility of conflict. The main drawback to this is that, for the most part, before getting married, couples do not know or love one another.
However, a significant form of discrimination that applies to both arranged and love weddings is that those who choose the latter are portrayed negatively in comparison to those who have been in an arranged marriage. Even though both couples have happy marriages, arranged marriage couples receive more recognition for their strong bonds. Elders currently view love marriage as illegal in several regions of the nation and label it as a rushed, immature choice that the couple would later regret.
