Mjuli or Majuli (mazuli) is a river island in Assam’s Brahmaputra River that was designated as India’s first district in 2016. It had an area of 880 square kilometres (340 square miles) before the turn of the twentieth century, but erosion has reduced it to 880 square kilometres (340 square miles) as of 2014. Majuli has diminished in size as the river that surrounds it has expanded in size.
The Brahmaputra River in the south and the Kherkutia Xuti, a Brahmaputra anabranch joined by the Subansiri River in the north constitute the island. Majuli island is reachable by ferry from Jorhat.
It’s around 10 kilometres (6 miles) upriver of Panjim. By ferry, the island is connected to Old Goa on the south-east, Ribandar on the south-west, and Narve on the north. From the island village of Vanxim, farther north-west, a launch connects Divar with the city of Panjim. The settlement is served by the Konkan Railway, with the train station at Carambolim being the closest stop.
The trip to the village is beautiful, with paddy fields and wooded hills around the route, reminiscent of the Goan countryside.
Diu Island is a small island off Gujarat’s Kathiawar peninsula, separated from the mainland by a tidal creek. It covers 40 km2 and has a population of 44,110 people (2001 census).
Administratively, it is part of the Diu district of India’s Damon, Diu & Silvassa union territory, and both Daman and Diu have the same member of parliament. The island is about 5 kilometres east of Diu Head.
