Cheri (Domain), an interior designer, and Peter Steinfeld, a personal fitness trainer, welcomed Hailee Steinfeld into the world on December 11, 1996, in Tarzana, California. Griffin is her brother’s name. Her great-uncle is the actor Larry Domain, and her uncle is the fitness trainer Jake Steinfeld. Her mother’s background is Filipino, African-American, British Isles, and German, while her father is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. Hailee grew up in Thousand Oaks, California.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical in 2016 for her work in the adolescent drama The Edge of Seventeen. Since 2008, she has received home education.
