Bhumika Chawla (born Rachna Chawla on August 21, 1978) is an Indian actress and former model who is most known for her work in Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil films. In the Telugu film Yuvakudu, she made her acting debut (2000).
Chawla was born in New Delhi, India, to a Punjabi family and attended school there. Her father served in the army and is now retired. Bhumika has an older brother and a younger sister.
In 1997, she relocated to Mumbai and began her career in commercials and Hindi music video albums. She was a part of the Zee TV shows Hip Hip Hurray and Star BestSellers – Fursat Mein.
Chawla began her acting career in the Telugu cinema industry, debuting alongside actor Sumanth in the feature film Yuvakudu (2000). Her second film, Kushi (2001), with Pawan Kalyan, was a box office hit, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu. She then acted in several Telugu films, including Okkadu (2003) with Mahesh Babu and Simhadri (2003) with Jr. NTR, which were two of the year’s highest-grossing Telugu films. Meanwhile, she made her debut in the Tamil film business, appearing opposite actor Vijay in Badri (2001), which was followed by Roja Kootam, her second Tamil feature (2002). Her portrayal of a cancer-stricken entrepreneur in Missamma (2003) was praised.
She received the Nandi Award for Best Actress after being nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu.
Chawla made her Bollywood debut in Tere Naam (2003), alongside Salman Khan, after a string of critically and commercially successful films in the South. The picture was one of the most successful of the year. It was a critical success, and her performance earned her numerous accolades as well as multiple nominations for Best Debut at various award ceremonies.
