Bollywood divorces and separations: Grace in grief

Know more about how Bollywood has handled relationship hurdles & separations in a mature manner

They say ‘Relationships never die a natural death, they are always murdered by ego, disrespect, selfishness or loyalty’. Well, what may be the reason, what’s important to realize is that when things go haywire, the best thing to do is to just separate & move on. It’s an idea that can be worked around for both individuals to ensure they are happy and going forward in the right direction in life. Bollywood certainly seems to have embraced grace in grief and has shown the maturity to deal with divorces and separations. Here are few instances:

From Hrithik Roshan-Sussanne Khan to Aamir Khan-Kiran Rao, Arbaaz Khan-Malaika Arora, Ranvir Shorey-Konkona Sen Sharma, Saif Ali Khan-Amrita Singh, & Arjun Rampal-Mehr Jessica, we have had countless examples of ‘relationships not working out the way as expected’ in the entertainment industry. However, what stood out for all these couples was the fact that they all maintained grace and dignity and avoided washing their dirty linen in public. So why not take a quick look at instances of these celebs that support the ideology of ‘humanity first, relationships later’.

Hrithik Roshan-Sussane Khan: The couple got married in 2000. However, 2013 came as a major shock for their fans when they issued two separate statements suggesting the fact that they have filed for divorce by mutual consent. A lot was said, written & speculated but they kept their dignity intact by remaining silent. Not just that, both have come together on many occasions for their children as they continue to ‘co-parent’ them together. Even today, we often see them commenting on each other’s social media posts and that’s exactly the kind of healthy bonding people want to see in couples who have separated & moved on in life.

Arbaaz Khan-Malaika Arora: Arbaaz Khan & Malaika Arora tied the knot in 1998 and for the longest time, they created their empire together and lived in paradise. However, things fell apart between the two when they officially got divorced in 2017. However, what’s heartwarming to see is they have never accused or shamed each other in public and have graciously accepted the past and moved on. Malaika is presently in a happy relationship with Arjun Kapoor whereas Arbaaz Khan is dating Giorgia Andriani. Both Arbaaz and Malaika maintain a civil relation where they continue to join the fun together for the sake of their son, eg. Arhaan’s 18th birthday celebration when Arbaaz and Malaika came together for him.

Ranvir Shorey-Konkona Sen Sharma: Ranvir Shorey & Konkona Sen Sharma connected right from the very beginning of the shoot of their film ‘Mixed Doubles’ in 2006. Both fell in love and tied the knot in 2010 but trouble hit in their married life soon due to which they separated in 2015. Both were officially granted divorce later and maintained minimal connection with each other. However, it was quite pleasing to see Konkona and Ranvir coming together for the sake of their son Haroon’s 10th birthday earlier this year. Both clicked a photo together with their son in the middle and the fact that despite differences, both share the common objective of goodness for their son was appreciated widely by netizens all over the country.

Saif Ali Khan-Amrita Singh: Ever since Saif Ali Khan & Amrita Singh got divorced, we haven’t seen them together ever. However, what’s noticeable is the fact that they have always maintained dignity and class by never spitting venom against one another in public. Not just that, people were in awe of Amrita’s progressive mindset when Sara Ali Khan was once quoted by Peeping Moon saying, “When my father got married to Kareena, I remember going to the locker with my mother and taking out jewellery and saying which jhumkas should I wear? She called Abu and Sandeep and said, ‘Saif is getting married and I want Sara to have the most beautiful lehenga.” Now, that’s quite literally the epitome of selflessness, right folks?

Arjun Rampal-Mehr Jesia: Arjun Rampal and Mehr Jesia were married for 21 long years and normally when a marriage ends after such a long duration, one expects it to be really ‘ugly’. Both Arjun and Mehr, ever since they were granted divorce officially in the year 2019 have been quite civil in their approach. None of them have spoken about each other in public & that’s the kind of dignified, respectful approach two individuals should have in order to not make a mess of the happy memories they had for such a long duration. Arjun is currently dating Gabriella Demetriades and they are currently co-parenting their child Arik.

Aamir Khan-Kiran Rao: Last but certainly not the least, the biggest & perhaps also the most shocking news from B-Town came when Aamir Khan & Kiran Rao released a joint statement on July 3 saying that they are ending their 15 years long marriage. While many speculated things are going really ugly between the two, Aamir Khan & Kiran Rao well and truly set an example by coming together for a zoom video call and ensuring all that it’s a mutual decision and most importantly, an amicable one with no hatred for one another. It was in a way validated as well when we recently spotted them playing table tennis together with their son Azad during their Ladakh schedule of Laal Singh Chaddha.

All said & done, while we have earlier seen horrendous & appalling endings to marriages, Bollywood couples and their matured stance have certainly helped in setting the right example ahead in front of Gen-Z. It’s okay for a married couple whose relationship has gone down in the doldrums to separate after many years. It’s also completely ‘okay’ to be ‘friends’ despite a separation. However, what’s certainly not ‘okay’ is to be disrespectful in public & let others enjoy the ‘drama’. Live & let live without any judgements & see the society turn into a better place.
