Bollywood has released quite a few gems that will go down in Indian film history. But it’s not just the plots and the actions that make a movie memorable. There have been quite a few movies that faced controversies that will always be remembered by audiences.

1) Padmaavat:
This is one of the controversial movies in India. But the controversy didn’t just take over this country. The Malaysian government banned the film as it had content that touched upon some of the sensitivities of Islam and it could offend the Muslims in the country.

2) Bombay:
This fanatic movie revolves around what led to the Mumbai riots back from 1992 to 1993. While it is a critically acclaimed movie and will go down in Indian film history, its release faced tough times. The movie was banned in Singapore for citing ‘religious’ tensions.

3) The Dirty Picture:
This biographical movie was based on the stunning actress Silk Smitha. The movie met a tough crowd outside the country. It was banned in quite a few countries like Kuwait as the character was ‘too bold’ for the audiences.

4) Neerja:
This movie was based on the true story of a Braveheart air hostess who sacrificed herself to save the passengers on a flight that was taken over by a terrorist. The movie was banned in Pakistan as it showed Pakistan in a bad light.

5) Oh My God:
This was one of the biggest movie releases in India and got quite a lot of praise for questioning religious fanaticism. While the reviews and the criticism were mostly positive, the movie was still banned in quite a few middle-eastern countries because of hurt religious sentiments.

6) Fiza:
This movie revolves around a middle-class Muslim man who ends up becoming a militant. Malaysian Government weren’t too happy with the plot and banned the film on the belief that Muslim men can’t be terrorist.

7) Bell-Bottom:
This movie was banned in quite a few middle east countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. The movie faced backlash as it is said to have tampered with historical facts. According to a Times of India report, the movie shows the hijackers getting on the aircraft to Dubai from Lahore but the actual 1984 incident was personally handled by the United Arab Emirates Defence Minister, Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
