Actress Janhvi Kapoor claims that her famous mother, Sridevi, expressed concern about her entering the film industry because she believed her daughter was too “naïve and soft-hearted” to work in such a competitive field. Five months after Sridevi died in Dubai in July 2018, Janhvi Kapoor made her big-screen debut with Dhadak. Janhvi talked candidly about her first encounter with her mother, during which she initially told her about her aspirations to become an actress, in a recent interview with ET Times.

Janhvi claimed that her mother’s immediate response was “don’t get into it,” as she believed that she had toiled long and hard for her children’s enjoyment of a comfortable life—something that the film industry can never deliver. Janhvi, who was 21 when Sridevi passed away, claims that her mother questioned why Janhvi wanted to put herself through the hardships of the industry because she thought Janhvi could easily get carried away, suffer severe injuries, and didn’t want her to become accustomed to the demanding nature of the work.

When Janhvi Kapoor reiterated that she was certain of her desire to pursue acting, Sridevi reportedly nodded in agreement, but not before cautioning her about the nature of the business and how she would have to endure unfavorable comparisons to the celebrity in order to carve a niche for herself. Janhvi claimed she was aware that competing with her mother’s distinguished career of more than 50 years would be difficult, but she also understood that if she didn’t become an actor, she would be tragic for the rest of her life.

Since making her acting debut in 2018, Janhvi has appeared in films like Roohi, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, the Netflix anthology Ghost Stories, and her most recent offering, Good Luck Jerry. Khushi Kapoor, her younger sister, will also be making her acting debut in Zoya Akhtar’s live-action musical The Archies. Suhana Khan, the daughter of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and Agastya Nanda, the grandson of megastar Amitabh Bachchan, make their acting debut in the Netflix film.

Milli, Mr. and Mrs. Mahi, and Bawaal are just a few of the movies that Janhvi has in the works. While her father, Boney Kapoor, is the producer of Milli, Mr. and Mrs. Mahi will see her reuniting with Roohi co-star Rajkummar Rao. She recently finished filming Bawaal, which was directed by Nitesh Tiwari, and also starred Varun Dhawan.
