Every now and then, a character requires a little more from an actor, such as cutting off all of their hair. Almost every time, a talented celebrity is ready to take on the challenge. If you’re looking for some motivation to go for a close-crop (or shorter) this summer, we’ve picked up 5 celebrities who cut their hair to get into character.
1. Joey King
Joey King had to agree to shave her head in order to land the role of Gypsy Blanchard in the biographical series The Act. King stated she liked the shorter cut and “sort of wanted to preserve it” even after filming was finished.
2. Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart’s decision to shave her head for her role in Underwater was completely pragmatic. Because her character’s costume had a lot of helmets, the actress claimed that she volunteered for the buzz cut because it would be easier to manage during filming. She told The Today Show, “I mean, I’m not going to be able to do touch-ups once I put the helmet on, so I have to shave my head.”
3. Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves had some of the worst hair in Hollywood back in 1993. As a result, when the actor shaved his head to the bare minimum for his role in Speed, it was a major issue.
4. Millie Bobby Brown
Millie Bobby Brown, who played Eleven in Stranger Things, was just 12 years old when she shaved off her hair. The decision proved to be the best for the young actress, whose career took off as a result of the role. On Instagram, she later described the encounter as “the most empowering moment of my entire life.”
5. Tom Cruise
When Tom Cruise’s character in Minority Report displays his shaved head, it’s a big deal, and a bald cap just won’t do. So, in real life, Cruise opted to shave his head.
