God can sometimes be cruel: Meghna Malik on Irrfan Khan’s death

TV, film and theatre artist Meghna Malik who worked with the late Irrfan Khan in his last film Angrezi Medium is very disturbed with the tragic demise of this very talented actor who was at the top of his game.

Says Meghna, “I too had heard about him getting admitted to hospital, but hoped would return home soon.”

“One of the main reasons for saying yes to this film was getting an opportunity to work with a volcano of talent. He was very fluid and natural on camera. His death will be a huge blow to the industry. I sometimes feel that God can be cruel.”

“Irrfan was my senior at NSD, so when we met for shoot, he was warm and friendly, and was also aware of my work.”

“On set, I got close to his better half Sutapa Sikdar. My now-deceased father was also battling something in hospital at that time, and seeing Irrfan overcoming a rare type of cancer gave me hope as well.”

“I was amazed at how he was still so devoted to the craft (on return). Ever ready to give as many takes as required.”

“Although I have no clue about how and when the Big C flared up again, yet his absence from the film’s promotion was indicative that he was under some treatment.”

“Had Angrezi Medium got proper release would it have been a fitting tribute?

“It was unfortunate that theatres shut down the same day we released. As far as paying tribute, he has done a lot of work which will keep him forever immortal. Also many have since seen the film online.”
