Lawrence started appearing in Louisville, Kentucky, community plays, and school productions at a young age after deciding she wanted to be an actress. She traveled to New York City with her mother to explore talent agencies when she was 14 years old, seeking to break into the acting and modeling industries. A talent scout found her there, and she later tried out for his agency. She worked as an actress in modest roles and a model for commercials during that summer in New York.
