The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has, it is fair to say, lost some of its appeal over the years, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of wonderful moments in it. The Curse of the Black Pearl, starring Johnny Depp (who won’t be back), marked the start of the series in 2003. He received a lot of praise for the part and was even nominated for an Oscar for it.
The series has made billions of dollars and, after five films, may have reached the end of its usefulness. However, Johnny Depp’s portrayal of a flamboyant pirate and the epic direction by Gore Verbinski are typically what draw audiences to the theatres, so it is only fair to relive some of the series’ best scenes from the pirate chest.
Chest Fight
In this scene, Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Commodore James Norrington engage in a full-fledged sword battle as they compete to use Davy Jones’ heart for their respective agendas. What initially appeared to be a miscommunication turned into a heated argument. Turner wants to stab Jones’ heart to release his father from servitude aboard The Flying Dutchman, while Sparrow wants to use the heart as a form of blackmail to escape his impossible debt. Norrington wants to use the heart to reclaim his title as Commodore.
Jack Skellington
This sequence was for fans who wanted to be surprised. After Sparrow makes the cunning decision to work with his adversary Barbossa, he later turns against him and supports Will Turner. After a brief fight between Sparrow and Barbossa, Sparrow is stabbed, but it isn’t until he leans back into the moonlight that it is seen that he, too, is an undead creature like Barbossa’s crew. Sparrow had taken one of the chest’s golden coins.
The excellent portrayal by Johnny Depp as what appears to be a Walking Dead zombie is what makes this scene so incredibly terrifying. It resembles something that might have been created in a Disney lab specifically for kids and taken straight out of a horror film.
