Jennifer Lawrence has spoken out over why her Don’t Look Up co-star Leonardo DiCaprio was paid $5 million more than she was for the dark comedy, despite the fact that she was handed the lead role. The actress, 31, stated in an interview with Vanity Fair that she battled to have her name appear first in the credits for the film, noting that she ‘was number one on the call sheet’ and wanted that to be ‘reflected’ in the billing.
While she was able to gain the number one slot in the credits, she then learned that her 47-year-old male co-star received a greater remuneration, earning $30 million compared to her $25 million, or 83 cents for every dollar DiCaprio was paid. Lawrence said that ‘Leo brings in more box office than she does’ when asked about the wage disparity, but emphasized that she is ‘very lucky and delighted with her agreement.’ However, the Oscar winner stated that it is still “very unpleasant to query about equal pay,” adding that wage disparities are frequently blamed on other concerns, which no one can pinpoint.
‘Look, Leo makes more money at the box office than I do,’ she explained. ‘I consider myself quite fortunate and pleased with my arrangement.’ In other cases, though, I’ve noticed — and I’m sure other women in the field have noticed as well — that asking about equal pay is exceedingly unpleasant.
