Mrunal Thakur‘s newfound confidence in the regional cinema business stems from the good reception to her Telugu debut Sita Ramam. While the actor has switched her concentration south, she has no plans to abandon Bollywood
“As an actor, you must be language and platform neutral. You cannot park yourself in a segment or area. That is when your progress becomes stagnant. I will continue to be part of Hindi films as much as I will also seek and want to work in films in the south,” Thakur said to Hindustan times adding, “I have made my Telugu debut and there’s so much more to be presented and explored. I hope to even work in other languages, eventually even helm a terrific Marathi film too”.
The Jersey actor is currently on the search for interesting stuff. “I want to collaborate with innovative directors and be a part of their filmography. There are so many significant films occurring there and I do want to be part of films that will improve me as an actress,” she adds, adding that there are some visionary directors in the business “who have always been ahead of the curve and have led by example”.
Right now, Mrunal is open to making films in southern languages, whether for theatrical exhibition or OTT platforms. The most crucial factor for her is how relevant the character is.
In fact, when it comes to the box office, South Indian film, which includes the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam language industries, has recently beaten its more Hindi cousin. However, Mrunal believes it is simply a phase.
“Good content can live anyplace. It might be a phase, but I’m confident that more excellent Hindi films are on the way that will entice people to return. Similarly, so much amazing storytelling has occurred on OTT in the last two years; one should recognize this and understand that this was a tsunami of change and fantastic writing and material driven by the Hindi cinema business,” she adds.
