Reese Witherspoon has one of Hollywood’s most prosperous and varied careers. In cinema and television, the Academy Award-winning actress starred in everything from rom-coms to severe dramas. She is the most recognized character, Elle Woods, in the classic 2001 rom-com Legally Blonde. She has also won significant praise from critics for her work in films like Walk the Line, where she co-starred with fellow Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, and the HBO series Big Little Lies.
Let’s see her other best roles.
Walking the Line
The actress co-stars Joaquin Phoenix as June Carter Cash, the country singer’s longtime wife and muse, in the biopic Walk the Line about Johnny Cash. She won the Best Actress Golden Globe and Academy Awards for outstanding performance.
“Wild”
Witherspoon switched to a different kind of role in the 2014 film Wild. The recently divorced Cheryl Strayed is followed as she hikes the Pacific Coast Trail in the movie, which is based on the book of the same name. She considers her life while traveling for 94 days, looking for a new sense of direction and purpose. Critics praised Witherspoon, and the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards nominated her for Best Actress.
Big Little Lies
In the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies, the actress was cast as Madeline Mackenzie with an all-star cast that included Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Zo Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, and, in the second season, Meryl Streep. This was after building up a resume full of film appearances. The gang of ladies must try to hide their secrets before they are discovered as single mother Jane (Woodley) moves to the affluent suburbs of Monterey. Witherspoon received several nominations for her role in the television series that won an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
Little Fires Everywhere
In Little Fires Everywhere, a Hulu series based on the same-titled novel by Celeste Ng, her most recent performance transports viewers back to the ’90s. Elena Richardson, a suburban housewife, and Mia Warren, a traveling artist, are played by Witherspoon and co-star Kerry Washington. Before being involved in their friends’ custody dispute, the two neighbors coexisted in shaky concord.
Sweet Home Alabama
Witherspoon’s newly engaged character, Melanie, had to go back home to small-town Alabama to finalize her divorce from her childhood sweetheart after fleeing to launch a prosperous fashion brand there. It has a stellar cast and is a wonderful movie (Patrick Dempsey, Candice Bergen, etc.). Who can forget the Tiffany & Co. movie’s proposal moment, either?
