1) What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993):
He played the role of Johnny Depp’s mentally challenged brother Arnie in the movie. This was one of his most impressive roles considering how realistically he portrayed the mannerisms of a person with a developmental disorder. However, he was only nominated for Best supporting actor. He lost to Tom Lee Jones as a US Marshal in The Fugitive.
2) Titanic (1997):
DiCaprio’s depiction of Jack Dawson was quite noteworthy. The emotional depths that DiCaprio portrayed as Jack made it memorable, while the romantic scenes as well as the traumatic ones! While the movie was honored with 13 academy nominations out of which it won eleven, DiCaprio wasn’t even nominated.
3) Catch Me If You Can (2002):
DiCaprio shines in this movie alongside Tom Hanks. DiCaprio’s character uses his wits to get away with his cons. The movie has its moments. DiCaprio was nominated for a Golden Globe however it was his on-screen father, Christopher Walken who was nominated at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actor.
4) The Aviator (2005):
This was a gritty biographical role of the actor. He portrays his character losing his mind to his germaphobe afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorder and a severe personality disorder. This role got his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor. However, he lost to Jamie Foxx, for his role as Ray Charles in the famed Soul musician’s biopic.
5) Blood Diamond (2006):
DiCaprio plays the role of a cocky, confident diamond smuggler. He brought depth to the character showing off the masculine character along with emotional mastery. He was honored with a second-Best Actor nomination by the Academy. But, once again lost to Forest Whittaker for his work in The Last King of Scotland.
6) Shutter Island (2010):
This psychological thriller is set in an asylum for the criminally insane based in Shutter Island. The actor does a wonderful job of portraying a flawed and mysterious character. While it was the second highest-grossing film, it didn’t receive any nomination by the Academy or the Golden Globe.
