In the 1996 romantic drama film ‘Gokulathil Seethai,’ Vijay Sethupathi made his debut big-screen cameo as an ‘audience member.’ Following that, he appeared in films such as ‘M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi’ (1996), ‘Pudhupettai’ (2006), and ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’ (2009). Vijay earned his first break as the lead actor in ‘Thenmerku Paruvakatru’ after over a decade of minor supporting roles (2010). The film went on to win three ‘National Film Awards,’ including the year’s ‘Best Tamil Feature Film.’

In the same year, he made his Telugu film debut in the historical action film ‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy,’ directed by Surender Reddy (2019). He most recently appeared in Karthik Swaminathan’s drama film ‘Mughizh,’ which was released in 2021.
