Elle Woods will return to the big screen in May 2022 for Legally Blonde 3. MGM Studios revealed this in late 2020. While the sequel to Legally Blonde is still in the works, it has yet to begin production. It’ll be a lengthier wait, and Mindy Kaling, one of the film’s writers, has recently provided an update on why that is.
Mindy Kaling is a gifted writer and producer who has written for The Office, The Mindy Project, The Sex Lives of College Girls, and Never Have I Ever, among other shows. She’s also a huge Legally Blonde fan and Reese Witherspoon’s pal. Kaling’s most recent update is as follows:
Kaling opened up to Time about how excited she was to have the popular comedy in her hands. Simply said, she doesn’t want to mess it up, therefore she’s spending time writing a strong script before starting production. For the last two years, Mindy Kaling has been attached to write Legally Blonde 3 alongside Dan Goor, the creator of Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Of course, Mindy Kaling is busy with other projects of her own, while Reese Witherspoon has been operating her own media firm, Hello Sunshine. Among a long list of other films and TV shows, she recently produced the upcoming adaptation of Where The Crawdads Sing.
Although we’ll have to wait a little longer for Legally Blonde 3, Mindy Kaling has given cinemablend-com some insight into the questions she hopes to solve with the sequel. As she puts it:
“What is Elle Woods like now that she is 42 years old? Is she able to become everything she desires? What does a grown woman’s personality look like? Has she gotten more pessimistic? When she was 22, her brightness and cheerfulness worked well, but how has life affected her perspective?”
We’ll be interested to see how Elle Woods is developed in Legally Blonde 3, especially since it’s been over 20 years since we last saw her in a film.
Fans of Legally Blonde appear to be in excellent hands with Mindy Kaling. In today’s world, she is certainly a true believer in the Gemini vegetarian and all of her bending and snapping. Witherspoon has risen to prominence in Hollywood since appearing in the original film, and she has a plethora of other projects on the horizon, so it would be a waste of her time if the sequel didn’t do Elle Woods due.
