In 2008 on the night of Katrina Kaif’s birthday party on July 18 something happened between Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. The spat was so ugly and scarring that for years thereafter Katrina swore off birthday parties, her own that is.
On the morning after the historic bash-up at the bash it was Ranbir Kapoor who rang me up to excitedly share details of what happened between SRK and SK.
Ranbir used to take baffling pleasure in recounting ugly incidents. I thought he was just making up the very public fight between the two Khan superstars (Ranbir was also known to fabricate and fantasize profusely).
Sadly it was true. SRK and Salman almost came to blows at Katrina’s birthday party. What happened? Nobody knows the full story. But the tension between the two Khans was building up the entire evening. The bone of contention was a certain Ms Rai. No one knows what was the flashpoint between the two. But apparently SRK made a comment on the lady that did not go down well with Salman.
Before the guests knew it the two were at each other’s throat, much to the horror of the birthday girl.
“I couldn’t believe this could happen at my birthday,” she mumbled to a friend the next morning. Well, lady, if you put SRK and Bhai in the same room, anything can happen.
Shah Rukh and Salman’s relationship has always been stormy. Most of the time they don’t even pretend to be friends. When they do, they end up looking as fake as Karan and Arjun in Rakesh Roshan’s film.
I remember Salman glaring at me when I had once, a long time ago, said Shah Rukh was a gentleman.
“Oh, really?” Salman smirked.
