Review of The Sky Is Pink : An emotional ride that's set to touch your heart

Movie: The Sky Is Pink

Cast : Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim, Rohit Saraf

Direction : Shonali Bose

In today’s time and age when movies have become a subject of entertainment, we definitely want a 3 hours package full of action, comedy, love & romance. A traditional approach to things would be that in order to make a successful film, you need to make a compilation of all these elements to make it liked by the audience. But then, there are certain reality based stories which even though might not be creating a laughter marathon for you at the movies, but it will still manage to touch your heart and this is exactly where Shonali Bose’s The Sky Is Pink wins beautifully when it comes to the creative side of things.

The movie is based on the life of writer Aisha Chaudhary, a 14 years old motivational speaker who eventually lost her life because of diseases like SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) and Pulmonary fibrosis. The movie is about how Aisha’s parents fight it out against odds and battle it together to survive to be together for the sake of their daughter. The couple Niren Chaudhary (Farhan Akhtar) and Aarti Chaudhary (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) have been one of the unlucky couples who have lost their daughter, not one but twice in their life due to the rare complication in them as a disease. After losing their first daughter Tania, Aarti and Niren end up having another baby in the form of Aisha who too unfortunately passes away at the age of 18 due to the same disease. The beautiful story is primarily about how Niren and Aarti give their best shot by trying to give Aisha all the happiness in life that she deserves. From working like bonkers to treating Aisha in London, to taking care of every single requirement of hers, Niren and Aarti had left no stone unturned to save and protect their child. But alas as destiny sometimes is too harsh and that’s been the case exactly with the Chaudhary family. Both Niren and Aarti in the process have several arguments related to Aisha’s health, sometimes so much that it often took off to the stage of their separation but eventually since the goal to protect and save Aisha was common, the bond and love always won over ego and self-respect. From giving Aisha a puppy to giving her the ultimate experience of a water ride, the Chaudhary couple do everything possible for their little girl child to enhance her happy mood and as parents, they are truly inspirational as they come off as a living example to show till what extent parents can always go upto for their children and unconditionally. However, the reality of the story since already known is painful to the core and Aisha’s death in the climax will just add to the already flowing tears in your eyes.

IWMBuzz Verdict : Both Farhan Akhtar and Priyanka Chopra Jonas are simply fantastic in the role of Aarti Chaudhary and Niren Chaudhary and right from their body language to the look, they have got it all right in the movie. It was like a breath of fresh air to see Priyanka Chopra in the movies once again but without any doubt, Zaira Wasim’s portrayal of Aisha Chaudhary is the true blue emotional content of the whole movie and she is simply phenomenal as Aisha Chaudhary.Rohit Saraf as Aisha’s brother is really good and his character will surely set new standards and responsibilities for brothers towards their sisters. The story is already an emotional ride for anyone who has seen children and diseases interlink early on in their respective families and director Shonali Bose totally succeeds in penetrating deep into your heart to make you sob and fall weak to an extremely saddening yet impactful story. The script of the movie is really strong and it adds further value to the direction. The cinematography and the background score adds deeper layers and elements to the whole narrative and it is the right selection of the right background score at the right emotional zones which further manages to delve deep into your heart. The movie has it’s own share of subtle comic and romantic moments but beyond anything else, it’s a learner for sure and most importantly, it teaches you to have a totally different and positive new perception towards life regarding how you can find things ‘merry’ and ‘pink’ in the hardest of times. Overall, an impactful, heart and soul touching movie, it’s a must watch for everyone if you just want to see yourself connect more to the deeper roots of reality and how to handle situations better. Kudos to Shonali Bose for braving this act and that too telling a simple and emotional real story from the eyes of two bona-fide stars so beautifully without letting their stardom come in the middle of the story narrative and that’s exactly what makes the movie a total winner. The sky is ‘pink’ for sure.

3/5 stars.
