They say that in India, when two individuals get married, it’s not just their union. It is also the union and marriage of two families blending into one. India as a country takes wedding very seriously and no wonder, on that one special day, everyone want to ensure that they make it memorable in the best way possible. Traditionally, the country is known for its unity in diversity and just like any other form of diversity, we see the same during wedding style avatars as well. However, if there’s one thing that’s always common in any wedding irrespective of any religion, it would be the ‘OTT style statement’ that the bride and the groom pull off with swag and grandeur. Style and fashion in itself might evolve. But the fact that both bride and groom want to look their ‘all time best’ on their special day to etch the feeling in their hearts is truly special indeed. As far as style statement is concerned, Indians who are more often than not obsessed with B-Town celebrities always look forward to getting special vogue tips from their favourites. Be it a simple regular casual style statement or the perfect ‘airport look’, our celebrities always bring their A game in that department to spin heads. Well, there’s absolutely nothing different when it comes to wedding fashion as well.
What makes wedding fashion all the way more important and special is that unlike other forms of style statement like airport looks etc where there’s always a corridor of opportunity to do better the next time, you don’t really get that in marriage. That’s why, it’s all the way more important to ensure that you look your best on that given day as it’s important you carry memories of that special day throughout your entire life. The great Nina Garcia once said, “Style is a deeply personal expression of who you are, and every time you dress, you are asserting a part of yourself.” Just like any other vogue trend, it’s only natural that wedding fashion trends too will evolve over time. Yes, the basics will always remain same. But hey, if one takes a close look at the minute detailing, a lot has certainly changed in India and no wonder, our ‘richie rich’ B-Town celebrities have been leading the way in that department.
When one takes a close look at things, there’s a lot of difference in how actors who got married during the 90s looked on their wedding day in comparison to how actors look now. No change happens overnight and this one too has been a gradual process. During the time, couples like Shah Rukh Khan-Gauri Khan, Ajay Devgn-Kajol and Akshay Kumar-Twinkle Khanna got married, what’s strikingly visible is how the primary focus was entirely on the bride’s look and how suble the groom looked on his big day. Well, subtle was the ‘old’ it seems. While Ajay wore a simple white Nehru coat with one garland, Kajol was decked up in a stylish green borderline printed saree with minimal work. The makeup was very simple and the amount of accessories worn is strikingly different from what brides today chose for the big day. It pretty much is the same for SRK-Gauri and Akshay-Twinkle. Both Gauri and Twinkle went with the ‘all time’ safe choice of red Benarasi saree. While Gauri’s wedding look had a lot of jewellery, Twinkle hardly wore any on the big day, a phenomenon beyond imagination in today’s B-Town weddings. SRK too seemed content with his simple black suit and ‘pagdi’ look for his big day without any special jewellery. So in a nutshell, this was pretty much what wedding fashion used to be around for B-Town in the 90s.
Things changed slightly in the 2000 decade and that’s when, weddings were no longer about all ‘OTT’ look for just the girl and simple and entirely subtle for the groom. The best example of the same has to be the wedding look of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Both got married in the year 2007. Unlike previous weddings, in Abhishek’s case, we saw both the groom and bride matching up in terms of vogue statement. While Aishwarya looked gorgeous in a yellow Bandhani saree with heavily customized jewellery, Abhishek too looked like a royal prince in a shimmery wedding suit with garlands and matching jewellery around his neck. We loved the contrast of shimmery silver and green neckwear in the accessories department. Something similar yet unique was seen during the wedding of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan few years later in 2012. While Kareena pulled off a stunning red and green heavily embroidered saree, Saif was a regal prince in a Bandhgala suit with sehra. As expected from the ‘Nawab’ he ditched jewellery and preferred to use props just to add to the royalty factor. All these were quite different from what was seen during wedding in 90s and we can certainly say it was a welcome change.
Soon, came the time few years later when the likes of Sonam Kapoor-Anand Ahuja, Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas, Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone and Virat Kohli-Anushka Sharma got married. Soon, the concept of twinning look came over and that’s why, majority of the couples started focusing on the same. While Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas and Sonam Kapoor-Anand Ahuja opted for a contrast style, the likes of Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone, Virat Kohli-Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt preferred to twin with their partners on their big day. While Virat and Anushka kept it similar in a shade of off-white and baby pink contrast in their wedding looks, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone decided to twin by keeping the same shade of red in one of their special looks. Ranbir and Alia, on the other hand, chose to keep it entirely subtle by going for the off-white shade. Although there was nothing flashy about their wedding look, we loved the way how the pair wore accesories like jewellery, ‘mang tika’ and bracelets to compliment each other in every way possible.
To sum things up in a short, B-Town wedding fashion has indeed seen a lot of change. From the time of actresses opting for tailored outfits for their big day to eventually getting their special customized sarees by designers like Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and others, we have come a long way forward. In terms of groom style too, there’s a big difference. From keeping it entirely subtle and putting minimum effort to now men being ‘metrosexual’ in every way to match up with the style statement of their ‘lady love’, we have seen this amazing transformation over the years and no brownie points for guessing, it is indeed impressive and inspiring at the same time.
Well, all we can say is that ‘change’ is the only constant in life and just like how we have seen wedding vogue trends change in the past decade, we are only going to see things getting better and bigger in the coming years. Excitement awaits.
