2022 had its fair share of debutant directors, like Abhishek Pathak who directed Drishyam 2, one of the most successful films of the year, and Tushar Jalota whose Dasvi got a substantial amount of praise on the digital platform. Jasmeet K Reen was a remarkable directorial discovery . Her Darlings was one of the OTT’s most successful feature films on Netflix.

This year begins with Aasmaan Bhardwaj Kuttey. Son of Vishal Bhardwaj, Aasmaan seems to have inherited his father’s style of dark crime-infested filmmaking. As Gulzar who has mentored both father and son Bhardwaj would say, ‘Tum aa gaye ho noire aa gaya hai.’

Shantanu Bagchi makes an impressive directorial debut in Mission Majnu a taut tensile espionage tale which makes its debut on Netflix in January and is expected to rescue Siddharth Malhotra’s ailing career from the doldrums.

Randeep Hooda turns director with Swatantra Veera Sawarkar, the historical bio-pic also has Hooda playing the lead role.

Two superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kartik Aaryan are cast in the Hindi debut of directors who already have a huge name in other language films: Atlee in Jawan and Sameer Vidvans in Satyaprem Ki Katha.

Karan Johar puts on the full action mode for Siddharth Malhotra in Yoddha which is directed by the debutant duo Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha

All in all, there is much more to look ahead to among the new directorial talent of 2023 than last year.
