‘In a world where everyone is over-exposed, the coolest thing you can do is maintain your mystery’ – This is perhaps an old saying that we have been hearing for many years. However, in the 21st-century world that is primarily obsessed with the concept of ‘social validation’, the feeling of privacy and the ability to feel ‘complete’ with minimal to no company is worth a billion dollars. India, as a country has always been fascinated with the big-fat Indian wedding system.
There was a time when no wedding would be considered complete without having friends and distant-relatives whom you perhaps haven’t met even for centuries. However, the culture has slowly changed in the last few years and B-Town too seems to have embraced this wonderfully. Yes, the concept of a lavish and extravagant ‘marriage reception’ is here to stay in the long run as well. But what has drastically changed is the approach of the modern-day brides and grooms who prefer to keep their marriage day invitation restricted to just a few very close friends and family. If B-Town couples led the way to popularize this trend in the last few years, the modern-day youth has certainly followed it with complete conviction. Yes, there will always be exceptions in the form of Varun Dhawans and Sonam Kapoors of the world who preferred having an extended guestlist and gala celebration on their wedding day as well. But given the pattern we have seen in the last few years for celebrity couples, we can certainly foresee the direction we are headed. So here’s taking a quick look at some special B-Town couples who opted for a low-key wedding ritual in presence of just family, relatives, and few friends –
Virat Kohli-Anushka Sharma: Virat and Anushka aka ‘Virushka’ have been madly in love with each other for a long time. The duo have tackled all odds and after dating for a few years, they got married in the year 2018. Their wedding took place at a luxurious villa at Italy and guess what? Only Virat and Anushka’s immediate family members and few childhood friends attended the wedding. A grand reception was later held in Mumbai by the couple for the entertainment industry.
Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone: The love story between the two started to blossom for the first time on the sets of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Ramleela’ and soon, ‘Deepveer’ became the ‘go-to’ couple for the Gen-Z generation to seek couple goals. Just like Virat and Anushka, Ranveer and Deepika too opted for a destination wedding at a luxurious villa in Lake Como, Italy where only their immediate family members, a few relatives and friends were allowed to be present. Later after returning to India, they hosted a grand reception which was attended by the who’s who of the industry.
Nick Jonas-Priyanka Chopra: Unlike Virat-Anushka and Ranveer-Deepika, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra opted for the Umaid Bhavan Palace at Jodhpur to be the destination for their big-fat wedding. The destination might be different but the pattern was the same here as well. Only close friends and family members of the two attended the wedding which happened in Indian as well as American traditions. Later, the two of them hosted a grand reception in Mumbai which was attended by almost the entire industry.
Yami Gautam-Aditya Dhar: Well, unlike the other names our feature so far, this one was a complete surprise for everyone. The announcement happened from Yami’s end when she shared photos of her marriage ceremony with URI: The Surgical Strike director, Aditya Dhar. The two of them tied the knot at a farmhouse in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh and it was a very private affair in presence of close family and friends. There hasn’t been any grand reception from their end for the showbiz industry as well after they came back to Mumbai.
Neha Dhupia-Angad Bedi: Just like our other celebs, these two preferred keeping it low-key. The two of them tied the knot in an ‘Anand Karaj’ ceremony at a Gurdwara in Delhi and it was attended by only their immediate family members, relatives, and few friends. Just like everyone else, Neha, too preferred to announce the news directly on Instagram with a special photo from the marriage ceremony.
Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai: This is perhaps one wedding of the Indian entertainment industry that well and truly started the trend of ‘private shaadis’ in B-Town. When the buzz about Abhi-Aish wedding started for the first time, grapevine has it that many of the industry insiders were expecting to be a part of the ceremony. However, they were taken aback by the Bachchan family’s decision back then to keep things extremely private within just close friends and relatives. The two of them tied the knot at Big B’s Jalsa house in Juhu, Mumbai.
Neha Kakkar-Rohanpreet Singh: Well, this was perhaps one of the most surprising updates that came from Neha Kakkar’s end in a long time. The singer is known to use interesting marketing gimmicks to promote her work and around this time, her song ‘Nehu Da Vyah’ was about to release. While many thought that this too would be a joke, it was Neha and Rohanpreet who had the last laugh as they gave a surprise to everyone by getting married for real. It was attended only by their immediate family members and relatives and so far, the couple are going strong.
Kajal Aggarwal Gautam Kitchlu: Kajal Aggarwal, being one of the biggest and most popular actresses in the South regional entertainment industry, it is only natural that the limelight would always be on her personal life. Each and every time speculations started about her wedding, Kajal dismissed them like a savage babe. However, it was last year in September when she and her long-time boyfriend, Gautam Kitchlu decided to tie the knot. The marriage happened at Taj Hotel, Colaba and it was attended by only their family members and a few friends. During a super exclusive conversation with IWMBuzz which is their only interaction together as a couple after marriage till now, they had added that although they wanted to invite more friends, Covid-19 restrictions had a lot to do with keeping it very private.
Dia Mirza-Vaibhav Rekhi: This was another marriage that happened within the presence of only close friends and family. Fans were super happy to see Dia give a second chance to marriage after her previous divorce and recently, the couple were blessed with an adorable baby boy. The two of them got married at Vaibhav’s Bandra home in an intimate ceremony. Not just that, they preferred not to host any lavish reception or gala party after the marriage.
