Major Mukund Varadarajan, a decorated war hero, laid down his life during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. Posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, his wife, Indhu, received the honor from former President Pranab Mukherjee on January 26, 2015.
