It’s become a trend of sorts that Bollywood films have taken the route of adapting to remakes, mostly from South Indian language films. There is a huge list of films from the languages of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam that have been made in the Hindi language. Many of them have worked well for Bollywood and for the big stars playing lead roles in them. However, Bollywood has seen the other side too, with many films remade from the South not getting accepted by the masses.
So today, we at IWMBuzz.com talk about the films that have made the careers of our popular Bollywood heroes. Yes, we talk about the South films that have worked wonders for actors in Bollywood.
So here we go with the list!!
Aamir Khan:
The A.R Murugadoss Tamil film Ghajini starring Suriya was a huge hit in the year 2005. Bollywood was quick to cash in on this concept. And the man from Bollywood to match Suriya’s intense performance was none other than Aamir Khan. It was remade in Hindi in the year 2008 with the same title and went on to become one of the biggies in the career of Aamir Khan.
Salman Khan:
The commercial success that South star Vikram got for Sethu was emulated by Salman Khan with his thunderous performance in Tere Naam. The romantic drama film Sethu starring Vikram and Abitha was released in 1999. It went on to be one of Vikran’s huge success stories at the box office. Later, Bollywood roped in Salman Khan and Bhumika Chawla for its remake titled Tere Naam. This film is even today, considered to be Salman Khan’s one of the biggest hits.
Ajay Devgn:
Ajay Devgn has had two tremendous hits in his career which have been remakes of South films. The first to come was Singham starring Suriya. The big hit that it was, kickstarted the Singham franchise in Tamil. Soon, Bollywood remade the film with the same title which had Ajay Devgn playing the lead role.
Later, Mohanlal and Jeetu Joseph’s Drishyam created new records in Malayalam cinema in 2013. And in the year 2015, it was again Ajay Devgn who went on to star as the male lead in the Hindi version. Today, both Malayalam and Hindi cinema has seen Drishyam 2 doing very well in both languages.
Kartik Aaryan:
Mohanlal’s Geethanjali which came in the year 2013 went on to become Kartik Aaryan’s big-ticket Hindi film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 which brought him back into the business in 2022. But there is no denying the fact that Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was again loosely based on Geethanjali’s script, which was helmed by Priyadarshan.
Tiger Shroff:
Kshanam the super hit Adivi Sesh film in Telugu went on to become Tiger Shroff’s biggest claim to success, in the name of Baaghi 2. Adivi Sesh’s mystery thriller concept was remade in Hindi as Baaghi 2. Tiger Shroff bagged all the limelight for this film.
Shahid Kapoor:
Vijay Deverakonda’s romantic drama film Arjun Reddy was a huge hit in Telugu in the year 2017. Well, this film gave Shahid Kapoor his big success too. Arjun Reddy was remade in Hindi in the year 2019, and it saw Shahid Kapoor being at his intense best.
Akshay Kumar:
Akshay Kumar is another actor who has had two big successes with remakes from South. The comedy film Kaathala Kaathala starring Kamal Hassan and Prabhudeva went on to be remade in Hindi as Housefull. Housefull in Hindi was so successful that it kickstarted the next versions soon, which were again hits.
Also, Akshay Kumar had Bhool Bhulaiyaa as a big hit in his career. However, the film was a Mohanlal starrer film in Malayalam titled Manichitrathazhu, which went on to be remade in Hindi.
Well, this is not the end of the list as many successful Hindi films have been remade from South languages. A few of them include Hera Pheri (Ramoji Rao Speaking), Wanted (Pokiri), Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (Minnale), Saathiya (Alaipayuthey) and many more…
