Filmmaker Karan Johar revealed on Thursday that there are ongoing plans to develop a sequel to the action film Kill, which was produced under his banner, Dharma Productions. The original Hindi film, directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and featuring actors Lakshya, Tanya Maniktala, and Raghav Juyal, had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and was later released in Indian cinemas in July.

Johar shared that the film’s success, particularly its positive reception on an international platform like TIFF, was a significant milestone for his team. According to him, the film struck distribution deals during the festival, leading to an English remake and dubs in multiple languages, showcasing the expanding reach of Indian cinema on the global stage.

He further noted that, buoyed by this success, they are now working on a second installment of Kill, aiming for a similar impact internationally. He also mentioned an upcoming collaboration with Cannes award-winning filmmaker Meraj Imani, which he hopes will take their projects to various global film festivals.

However, Johar expressed his skepticism about the concept of “crossover” films. He argued that Indian cinema should remain true to its unique identity rather than attempting to cater to international tastes by compromising its essence. He emphasized that it is this authenticity that can attract global audiences.

Kill has been labeled as one of the most violent films to come out of India. In addition to Dharma Productions, Sikhya Entertainment was also involved in its production, with Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain serving as co-producers. The film performed decently at the Indian box office, reportedly earning over Rs 25 crore in its total run.
