Although the latest Akshay Kumar starrer Cuttputli has been released straight to the digital platform, the film is looking like another disaster for the beleaguered star. Cuttputli has opened to generally adverse reviews most of then comparing Cuttputli unfavourably with the original Tamil film Ratsasan.
The original starred Vishnu Vishal(who incidentally is married to badminton champ Jwala Gutta). Vishnu was unquestionably convincing as a rookie filmmaker moonlighting as a cop hunting down a serial killer.Akshay Kumar on the other hand doesn’t seem the correct age for the role. Most of the viewership sees Cuttputli as one more failure in the actor’s repertoire after Bachchan Pandey,Samrat Prithviraj and Raksha Bandhan.
An informed insider from a multiplex chain who doesn’t want to be named says both Akshay and the film industry needs a reality check. “Remakes don’t work any more since the original is available at home. Why would the audience see Cuttputli when Ratsasan is also available on OTT? The fee that Akshay Kumar is asking for(reportedly close to 120 crores) and the amount that producers are asking from the OTT platforms(Cuttputli was reportedly sold to Disney+Hotstar for approximately Rs 80-85 crores) do not agree with the reality about the presentday movie business.”
Akshay Kumar and his ilk need to urgently become realistic about their payscale before the movie industry collapses.
