Rajinikanth’s latest film Vettaiyan has made a significant impact at the box office, surpassing Rs 100 crore in India within just four days of its release. The movie earned Rs 31.7 crore on day one, followed by Rs 24 crore, Rs 26.75 crore, and Rs 22.25 crore on subsequent days. By its first Sunday, the total domestic earnings had reached Rs 104.8 crore, with Chennai and Trichy leading in terms of audience turnout, according to Sacnilk.
The film had a 57.25% occupancy in Tamil-language screenings on that day.
On the global stage, Vettaiyan has been rather impressive as well, crossing Rs 200 crore in worldwide collections by day four. It earned Rs 77.90 crore on its opening day, Rs 45.26 crore on the second, Rs 47.87 crore on the third, and Rs 41.32 crore on the fourth day. The movie’s worldwide total stood at Rs 212.35 crore, as reported by film analyst Manobala Vijayabalan.
Due to the strong audience demand, producer Lyca Productions announced that additional screens would be added across key regions in India, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
Vettaiyan also holds the second-highest Tamil movie opening of 2024, with a global first-day total of Rs 64 crore, including Rs 37 crore from India and Rs 27 crore from international markets. The film is second only to Thalapathy Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), which had a Rs 100 crore opening. Among Indian films released this year, Vettaiyan ranks as the sixth highest opener, behind Kalki 2898 AD, Devara: Part 1, GOAT, Stree 2, and Guntur Kaaram.
Directed by TJ Gnanavel, Vettaiyan tells the story of a teacher who is killed while trying to expose a drug ring operating within her school. The cast includes Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Dushara Vijayan, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, and Abhirami in key roles. The film was released on October 10 in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam.
